School Shootings Need to End

What drives a person to shoot?

What drives a human to kill? What triggers the impulse to take action? The rate of school shootings is increasing. My question each time is “Why?” Why do a horrifying act? Recently, there was a shooting in Florida. A student shot 17 students and 14 others were wounded. There was no evidence as to why he did it.  His social media posts showed he wanted to kill people and had weapons. Someone who was following the posts should have reported or shared them with someone. After seeing his posts, people expected him to take action but no one took action in stopping him. No one had to face him. They should have told someone to stop him so he wouldn’t follow through with his plan – but he did.

CNN provided a statement about his mother dying which led him to depression but that still can’t explain why he resorted to killing? The Sandy Hook shooter was depressed as well. That’s saying that anyone who is depressed can kill. The shooters had a rough life but that doesn’t mean they can go on a killing spree. Another question that I really want to ask the family of the shooter is how can you not notice? How can you not see your family member starting to plan something? Did you not pay attention nor care? If they are depressed, why not take action to help rather than ignoring their problem? Take them to doctors or therapists. That could at least help them to express themselves and communicate in a way that doesn’t harm others.

I don’t think we can stop school shootings if we still have guns in our society. Because of the Second Amendment, anyone can use guns in any way possible. If the law continues as it is, we can expect to have more shootings. We cannot stop someone from taking action. There is too much freedom to do whatever they want. If we want to stop the shooting the government should take actions by passing and enforcing the gun laws, otherwise, we can’t do anything to stop more school shootings.

    THE NOTORIOUS NINETEEN
    Dear High School Journalist;
    Autumn is deepening, and seniors are seriously thinking about their next step. For many of us, your generation is the hope of the future. The Parkland high school shootings galvanized young people across the nation to passionately advocate for common sense gun laws. Now, as your attention turns to college, we want to turn our admiration into action.
    With the help of the Brady Center, the new Gabby Giffords consortium, Everytown for Gun Safety and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, we’re reaching out to high school journalists across the country with our list of the NOTORIOUS NINETEEN—the states with dangerous, inadequate gun laws. Many of them condone the open carry of weapons on college campuses, but even those who don’t have encouraged or tolerated a state-wide, lawless violent culture. Our mission is to make these states known to high school seniors, whom we encourage NOT to apply to college in:
    ALABAMA, ALASKA, ARIZONA, ARKANSAS, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, IDAHO, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NORTH DAKOTA, OKLAHOMA, TEXAS, UTAH, WEST VIRGINIA, OR WYOMING.
    We’ll be following up with letters to college presidents, Governors and legislators of the “Notorious Nineteen.” If they’re curious why their state-wide college applications are down this year, we’ll be happy to tell them!
    Thank you for considering the publication of this letter in your newspaper. This is how the world changes. Good luck throughout senior year…… and beyond!
    Best,
    John Jiler,
    Coordinator,
    Committee for Scholastic Action On Guns
