Recycling In Restaurants

What really happens to the recycling?

In my experience working at Shake Shack, I have found out that even though we have two bins, one for regular trash and one for recycling, we still put them both onto the trash compactor. This bothered me for the longest time as I worked there and people struggle to know what to throw away and what to recycle but they will both end up in the same place, sadly.  One night I was at the front counter taking care of the customers and then someone comes to me and asks, “Does it matter where I put my cup?” referring to the bins. He continues on saying that the restaurant he works at has a recycling bin but actually just throws it away with the trash. This was where I decided to go a bit deeper and look into this kind of situation. I told the guest that it doesn’t matter because we don’t really recycle here either. I tried to ask one of my managers about it and he said we do recycle, but only cardboard. However, we get around nine heavy duty bags of “recycling” every day. This disturbed me a lot and I learned to shrug it off but after awhile I realized that they don’t really recycle at Chick-fil-A either. In the back of the restaurant,  I always see Chick-fil-A throw away their trash bags but there is no place for them to put any kind of recycling – only for cardboard boxes. This shouldn’t be the case for recycling at all. But I do kind of understand because a lot of people don’t always put in what can be recycled which causes a problem. People would have to sort it out but I still believe there is a way to actually get people to recycle. In times where the world is still dying, we need to do our best recycle and do our part in order to not completely kill this world.
